Converting VHS or Digital movie to .AVI or .MPG

Hi everyone!

I'd need to shoot a short movie (about 3 minutes) and then convert it to
a format acceptable for PPT presentation (.AVI or .MPG).

What is the best approach to accomplish it? I guess digital movie camera
would be preferable. What are the formats digital cameras save the movie
in? How can the data be moved to a computer. Any extra HW or SW needed?

Yes, a digital movie camera (camcorder) would be great - then you could hook
it up to your computer's IEEE port and import the video using the free
Windows Movie Maker, which can save to the WMV format that PowerPoint can
accept.
