Copying group objects from PPT to Word

I am trying to copy grouped drawing objects (pictures) from Powerpoint to
Word. When I select and Copy, the correct thumbnail shows up in Word's
Clipboard pane, but when I actually paste, the group elements are swapped
around (and scaled to the original object size), or some are missing (with a
giant 'X' instead).

Is it just not possible to copy, or is it a setting in Word?

Clarifying the problem - it happens when I copy picture objects out of PPT
into Word (not every drawing object).
