Corrupt attatchments since upgrade to Tiger

M

Martin

Since I upgraded to Tiger, anytime i attach a non word document or
something that is over 40k in size, the person receiving my email says
that it is corrupt. I've tried sending .png, .zip, sitx, and other
formats to multiple people and all have the same behavior. It is
really critical that I fix this as I can't email attatchments to
anyone!!

Thanks,
Martin

By the way, I'm using the latest Entourage 2004 (v. 11.1.0) with all
updates applied...

Finally, I know this is specific to Entourage because I have tried
sending the same files using the lastest version of Mail.app and they
are received without any problems.

Same thing with a colleagues Mac, Martin.

SSL Office 2004. Clean install of Tiger and Office plus updates = corrupt
attachments in most cases.

He's tried it for three consecutive times, getting more conservative with
the installation process - still, mostly all attachments get busted.

Apple Mail works fine.

Same problem here. Corrupt attachments with Entourage 2004 and no
problem with Mail.

Is it possible that something reset your preferences for how to send
attachments? Look up "attachment encoding" in help and make sure the
necessary settings are correct.

No, there does not seem to be a dependency on the encoding. Neither the
attached filetype nor the encoding make a difference. Please note that this
is the third installation attempt for this Mac because of this problem;
trashing prefs was done during the first or second attempt. This is
happening on a completely clean system.

There are also reports of this problem on macfixit.com.

Having the same problem and its a BIG problem! Does anyone have a work
around for this? Switching to an entirely new mail client is not really
a work around since I keep everything in Entourage.

Thanks

Okay, everyone seeing this problem with corrupted attachments--another
question--in Entourage Preferences, do you have Compression set to None or
to Mac Stuffit?

Because I believe Tiger broke Stuffit? Perhaps related.

Tiger did not break the latest Stuffit 9.0. Did it break the Stuffit 7.0.4
(Stuffit Engine, not Expander) that comes with Entourage 2004? I no longer
have it so can't check.

It didn't break it, bad phrasing on my part, it works perfectly fine. But
apparently if you do a clean install of Tiger, it doesn't install Stuffit,
you have to do it yourself.

I have no idea what Entourage uses or doesn't use behind the scenes, except
that Help says:
"Compression isn't working.
You cannot compress a file or folder unless Aladdin Systems StuffIt is
installed on your computer. Aladdin Systems StuffIt is installed on your
Macintosh by default. See the documentation that came with your Macintosh if
you need to re-install this software."
Which doesn't sound like Entourage comes with a Stuffit Engine (which I
can't find on my hard drive, except for OS 9). Not that Help is necessarily
accurate.

JE McGimpsey is sending small and large attachments of all sorts from
Entourage 2004 fine under Tiger, and one of the things he mentioned is that
he doesn't use any compression. So it seemed worth checking with those who
are seeing this problem. At least one of whom did do a clean install.

I just updated to Tiger, and am running Entourage 2004 Version 11.1.0

If you give me some exact steps, I'm happy to test it out for you.

Ok, I set my Entourage prefs to compress everything using Stuffit. Then I
sent myself mail with an attachment and it stuffed just fine and sent just
fine and received just fine and unstuffed just fine and viewed just fine.

The same problem for me.

I've tried changing the encoding-settings for attachments but nothing works.
SOMETIMES it works if I use AppleDouble for encoding my attachments, but
this isn't a 100% solution.
I think we have to wait for a fix from Microsoft :-(
I'm really angry about this because now I have to send all mails including a
attachment from my notebook wich is still running 10.3.9. Therefore I have
to copy the whole Entourage-DB to the Powerbook and back...

Hope, the fix will arrive very soon - but at the Microsoft-pages I couldn't
find any comment to this problem :-(

CLEAN Install (i.e. Erase & Install) - maybe so. Here's how it is:

Both Jaguar (I think) and Panther (I know) included a version of
StuffitEngineShell.cfm in /Library/CFMSupport/ (that's the Library folder on
the root of your startup disk, not your user's nor in /System). In Jaguar I
think it was v7.0.0, in Panther it was 7.0.3. That's the one that wouldn't
work for Entourage 2004.

Entourage 2004 installed its own copy licensed from Aladdin (as it then
was), namely v7.0.4 on First Run, replacing the older version already there.
If you ever did an Erase & Install of Panther, you would have had to
re-install Office - or your own later than 7.0.3 paid version of Stuffit
Standard or Deluxe - to get the functionality back.

Now, it sounds as if maybe Tiger does not come with Stuffit Engine any
longer. (No deal with Allume, I guess.) So if you do an Erase & Install of
Tiger, you'd have to get the Stuffit Engine from somewhere else - namely a
later-than-7.0.3 paid version of Stuffit Standard or Deluxe (i.e. 8.0.x or
the current 9.0.x) - or else re-install Office 2004 and the updates to get
7.0.4 back.

If you did an Archive & Install, you should be able to find
StuffitEngineShell.cfm in Previous System 1/Library/CFMSupport/. Move it to
/Library/CFMSupport/ , relaunch Entourage, and Compression should work
again.

But Stu, it sounds as though you never had a problem with attachments
becoming corrupt under Entourage 2004/Tiger at all? Did you? Thanks for
testing, though.

There are 5 reports made here of attachments being corrupted and unopenable
by the recipient, when sent using Entourage 2004 under Tiger. My loose
hypothesis is that these people have Entourage set to Compress attachments,
the Compression uses Stuffit, and in certain methods of Tiger installation,
the Stuffit frameworks vanished (see Paul B's post). Which would account
for why some people are seeing the problem, and not all (at least 1 report
of attachments working fine under Ent 2004/Tiger). But it's just a theory.

It's fairly well reported on the web that Tiger doesn't include Stuffit, but
there's no proof that this problem of corrupt attachments is related. I'm
not even sure it's a good theory, since trying to compress with a missing
stuffit engine should probably result in failure or nothing rather than
corrupt attachments, but no one else seemed to have any guesses.

Nope :-(
I don't use stuffit compression an the attachments are corrupted, too.
And if I HAD stuffic compression enabled it would work because I've got
a actual stuffit pro 9.02 running fine on my system. It could not be a
problem caused by a missing stuffit expander...

I continue to have corrupted attachments even though Entourage has
never been set to compress them. Just checked again to be sure.

The same problem for me.
With all jpeg, .png, .tif, .sit, .zip, etc.

He have tried to reinstall for three consecutive times and it is the
same! All attachments are corrupt and I don't use Stuffit compression!
