counting hyperlinks in text?

J

JennyC

Newbie question:

At work we use Front Page 98 :~(((

I have one webpage in my care with a list of names (about 1700) - each name is a
hyperlink to another part of the web. Lots of the links go to an 'under
construction' page.

I need to know how many of the 'names' link to the 'under construction' page

I've tried the following:
1 - Dump HTML in a text file = won't files to large

2 - Dump in Excel = don't know how to convert the 'names' so that I can see the
URL (if I could I could count them....)

3 - Tried changing the name of the Under Construction page in the hope that it
would says "X numbers of links' = didn't, said "1 link" because the UC page is
used a lot in the list..........

4- Option 'hyperlink' in the FP web - shows lots of info but I don't see the
number of links anywhere

5 - Option 'hyperlink status' does not seem to be much use either

6 - Find option doesn't work either - I assume it looks thru the text and not
the HTML

Any ideas please??

Otherwise I'm going to have to go thu the whole b.....y list with search and an
abacus !

TIA, Jenny

It's been a while since I used 98, but if IIRC you can run a verify hyperlinks report and
when the report is done
sort it by clicking the column titles on the report page.

One of the columns "should" be what the link is linked to.

Tried that and indeed it does give a list but there is nowhere with the total
number..........Looks as if I'll still have to tally up!

Why not do a search for "underconstruction" on that page and see how many
hits you get?

Search in HTML shows the links, but there are probably somewhere in the region
of 400+ and 'find' shows them one by one, so it takes forever.

I'm looking for an automatic tally :~))

I even tried replacing the 'under construction' text in HTML with something
else. Works a treat, but does not say how many it found! (It's weird 'cos word,
excel, acces etc all seem to do it)

When you do a search or a search and replace for "under construction" in the bottom of the search
dialog FP will show the total number of pages in the site (those FP can edit), and the number of
pages with and the number occurrences of the search term.

Example:

Found 59 occurrences in 35 pages

Pages searched: 330/330

Do not use the Global setting, select where you would have to acknowledge each change.

Open the page in Word and do it there, then....

Murray: Does not work. As I said in my original post, I can't dump the file into
Word - I get an error when I try to 'select all'. And I can only access the
server that the file is on via FP :~((

I tried that already Thomas :~(
It replaces OK, but does not show the number as you suggest. Must be because
it's an old version..

Maybe I can dump the names into Excel and 'translate' them to URL's so they can
be counted that way.

Thanks anyway :~)

Which version of FP? I am using FP2000

You don't want to actually do the replacement, just get the count, correct?

FP 98
I work with the Dutch Police force and they are not exactly in the 21st century
yet as far as computers go :~(

I just want to know how many links there are to an "Under Construction" page
from a huge list of 1600 names.

Hi Jenny,
Just stick a bit of script at the bottom of the page - just before </body>
<script>
var x=0;
for(i=0;i<document.links.length;i++){
if(document.links.href.indexOf('UnderConstruction.htm')>-1)x++;
}
alert(x);
</script>

This will tell you how many links in the page point to UnderConstruction.htm

Ah Ha :~))

Off to work in a mo - will give it a try
