Create a New Document from Existing Template using a URL

Colin Halliday

Within our corporate intranet, I have a link on a web page to an existing
Word template in the file system. Clicking on the hyperlink works fine but
opens the template itself rather than creating a NEW document based on the
template. The form of the hyperlink is:

file:///L:/Workgroup Templates/Fax Coversheet

"Fax Coversheet.dot" is the template.

It is a simple html document with a list of all the templates available.
Staff can click on one of the hyperlinks and I want it to open a NEW
document based on the template, not open the template itself, just like when
they double-click on a template in Windows Explorer.

How do I tell it to use the new action on the template rather than the open
action??

Thanks.

Hi Colin

Create a shortcut to the template in the same folder as the template. Then,
in the HTML, link to the shortcut to the template, and not to the template
itself.

There's a KB article at microsoft.com that explains this, but I can't find
it at the moment.

Hope this helps.
