create subwebs

My site has gotten so large that when I am adding new
pages and building links it takes too long for the whole
site to load in the window that holds all of the page
options to link to. I would like to turn several of my
customers sites (5 or more pages) into subwebs. Can I just
create a new file in file view then drag all existing
pages and pictures that I want in the subweb into that file
and then convert to a subweb?
Better yet can I just drag the pages into the file and the
picture hyperlinks will still work?
