Creating a summary project

I am using MS Project 2003. I am attempting to create a highlevel
project plan that includes the highlevel summary task from several
other project plans. I know how to link tasks between separate
projects, but I don't want to show two task for the same tas, although
one is grayed out. I just want to show one with the %complete. In
addition, I want to add resources at the level and I didn't want to
have the extra tasks with no resources.

I hope this makes, sense, but if not, I can add more clarity.

Terry:

Firstly, whether or not linked tasks show as ghosts in other plans is a view
option in Project that you can control from Tools > Options > View tab. Does
this make the feature more useful for you?

Other than that, you can insert all your projects into a Master and apply
groups and filters to get the view you're looking for, although I'm not
completely certain what that is. If your project plans are structured with
the same high-level skeleton, you can get some amazing results by applying
grouping at the outline level. It's a nifty way to see phase overlaps in
related projects. Again, you must have consistent well structured plans for
this technique to work.

Are you asking how to turn off the display of the cross-project linked
tasks?

How to turn off the display of the cross-project linked tasks:
1) From the Main Menu, select [Tools][Options]
2) Click the [View] tab
3) Uncheck [Show external successors]
4) Uncheck [Show external predessors]
5) Click the [OK] button

Terry,
It kind of makes sense up to the point where you say, "I know how to
link...". After that, things get pretty fuzzy. For example, what do you
mean by "...two task for the same tas[k]..."? And then there's the
part about adding, "...resources at the level and I didn't want to have
the extra tasks with no resources." Say what?

If I make some assumptions it sounds like you want to have a separate
but linked plan of summary lines only. And to make it even more
interesting you want to assign resources to the summary lines in that
separate plan. The former might be better done with a master project
with inserted subprojects. The master can be filtered or collapsed to
show only summary lines of interest. As far as assigning resources to
summary lines I recommend go to our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and take a look at FAQ 49 - Summary Task Resources.

Before we, (or at least I), can be of much help, you will need to
explain your end goal a little better.
