Is it posible to create a CPN diagram using events and activities in project
2003, where the task (or activitiy) would actually be displayed on the
connecting line, meaning there would be no need for duplicate lines coming
out of each box.

I think you are looking for an AOA (activity on arrow) diagram.
Sorry, Project does not provide such a view.

Not sure what you mean by "duplicate lines coming out of each box". If
you're looking for AOA, as Julie said, Project doesn't have this
capability.
