Cross referencing AutoNumLgl\e

C

Carol NS

Hi. I've numbered some items in a file using
AutoNumLgl\e, but when I try to cross-reference them in
the body of the text (e.g. "See Activity 2") nothing
comes up in the "for which numbered item" list of the
Cross Reference window. What am I doing wrong?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Word doesn't automatically bookmark these fields. You need to bookmark them
manually in the text and then cross-reference the bookmarks.

This helps me, as I need to do this. However, Word
doesn't maintain the reference if I insert numbering into
the document. For example, suppose I have ten pictures
numbered throughout a document. I reference the numbers
as you describe. Suppose later I add two pictures
somewhere in the middle of the document. I can insert new
numbers and the remainder of the numbering changes, as it
should. However, in the document's text, where it may
say, see Figure 8, Figure 8 is now Figure 10, but the text
(or rather the cross-reference) doesn't change. Can Word
do this? That way, if I insert pictures, the reference to
those picture numbers will change throughout the text.

Thanks

Yes, Word can do this. In fact, it should do it automatically: I am not
sure how you have numbered the figures, but if you do it the way it is
described in the Help, the cross reference will automatically update when
the number updates.

However, you need to remember to update the numbers using Update Fields.
Select all the text in the document (Ctrl + a) and choose Update Fields
(F9).

Cheers
