Custom Field for Work Order #

D

Dave

I have inserted a custom field for tasks (number 1) for Work Order #. THey
can enter the work order # in this field in the gantt view. I want to
display this custom field in the resource usage view. Can I do it and if so,
how?

Thanks,
Dave

The Resource Usage view is a two-dimensional view of the resources and
properties of those resources (plus a time dimension if you show it).
The Task Custom Field No. 1 is a property of Tasks, not of resources.
It's not possible to show this additional Task property on a view that
is specific to Resources.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You might like to see FAQ Item: 37 - Custom Fields in Tables. FAQs,

Ah yes, that works, but it then becomes a property of the Resource, not
the Task ... Works for me though.

Hi,

Not necssrily; it can be copied ito a property of the ASSIGNMENT and then
shows in both Usage views

That's what I love about Project ... despite using it for years, learn
something about it every day ...

I didn't actually "see" in that FAQ 37 was about an Assignment custom
field. I frankly didn't realise until looking at that code that there
was such a thing as an assignment custom field (which of course an
assignment combines both the task and resource to be yet something
else). My predisposition to not knowing this is that I don't know how
to use the Project interface to define and/or view these custom
assignment fields. On Menu: Tools/Customise/Fields they only give
access to Task and Resource fields ... or do they?

How do we manually set Assignment fields, or is it only possible to use
VBA? Have I missed something?

Also, I took a new look at the Assignment Object document (not something
I really look hard at before as I don't do a lot of VBA programming
anymore), and I know see the property "Textn". Yep. Definitely learned
something today. Useful to for something that I've been working on re
the forecast cost of work estimates...

Thanks!

Hi Rob,

Glad to have been able to help you.
Some qiuestions remain, they deserve some answers.

Indeed, Assignment custom felds can not be "customized" in terms of value
lists...
But they can definitely be set manually.
For instance, a rapid way to copy a tasks's text7 to all its assignments'
text 7:
Task Usage View
Show asignments
Insert Text7 column
Select the task and its assignments' text 7 column
Ctrl+D or edit, copy down.

Or in VBA

For each job in activeproject.tasks
For each ass in job.assignments
ass.text7=job.text7
next ass
next job

And not asked for but interesting when you try to get some details from VBA:
teh asignment object has all the same timescaledata as resourc and task
objects.

Hope this helps,
