Custom view with sorts

M

Mitchell

I need to create a custom view using the Gantt chart. The default view should
use the custom sort by resource name and start date. We are trying to do this
in project and not the PWA.

Hi,

Not a such, no.
But you can program a VBA macro that does the sort and put that in an Open
or a View event.
Hope this helps,

Hi Mitchell,

Pardon me for jumping in and perhaps I am being entirely to simplistic
today, but yes, you can take the Gantt chart sorted as you desire and
make a view.

Start with the Gantt chart before you sort it -- usually sorted by Task
ID.
Go to View > More Views in the menu.
The Gantt chart view should be selected, select the Copy button.
In the View Definition dialog box, rename the copied view and click OK
to close the View Definition dialog box and return to the More Views
dialog box.
The newly created view should be selected in the list.
Click the Apply button to apply the new view you created.
Then apply the sort as you noted before.
You now have a new view with the sorting you need. Remember to leave the
sort as is. To return to a non-sorted view, just return to the Gantt
chart view.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie,

From my experience your method works perfectly as long as nothing changes in
the plan.
When sort keys change (such as start date in this case) tasks remain in the
order they are, the sort is not redone automatically.

Hi Jan,

Ah, great point! I knew I was being too simplistic and should have
remembered that sorting is not dynamic.

Thanks for the reminder.

Julie
