Can anyone tell me how to add a custom column that would compare Work to
Baseline work and then put a different colored flag depending on the variance?

I don't know if you are aware of this but the Work Variance field
already has the data you want, however, it cannot itself be set up for
graphical indicators. That can only be done with spare fields. I suggest
you set up a spare field (e.g. Text1) and customize it with a formula
for the difference. Then, further customize it with graphical
indicators. For example, you might have the following formula in Text1:
[work]-[baseline work]
Then set up graphical indicators to give the desired flag color
depending on whether the result was negative, zero, or positive.
