Add new activity after the creation of a baseline

Andrea Rizzi

Good afternoon.

I would like to know how I could manage the following situation in Project
2007:

0. a new project has been created
1. activities for the project have been created
2. a baseline has been traced
3. the customer has posted some new requirements and we want to create new
activities in the project without altering the original baseline

Solution:
We could create a new baseline (baseline 1) to register the planned work
hours for the new activities

Problem:
When we want to calculate enterprise ressources productivity using a project
server cube or when we want to calculate the variance using one of projects
default reports we don't know how to include the new baseline work hours
asigned to the new activities.

The default project's overview report that gives us the variance of work vs.
baseline doesn't take into account the new baseline planned work hours.

The cube we use to compute the productivity doesn't take into account the
new baseline either.

Is there a simple way to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The new work is a costed change proposal...
I am going to assume you have not started execution or taken any progress yet.
Add the tasks as you normally would
Select the new tasks and save a baseline as you normally would, but htis
time select the option "Selected Tasks" and make sure you also select the two
check boxes to roll up the totals to the new values.

If you want to track the costs of the new work separately, you will need to
identify them in work packages using a spare text field or the like. THen
group on that

If you have already taken progress on the existing baseline, you need to
back out your progress before adding to the baseline. Note that when you
re-baseline an existing task that has progress against it, you forgive all
variances.

Andrea - As per your statement "Solution: We could create a new
baseline (baseline 1) to register the planned work
hours for the new activities " doesn't see to be right. You need to
have your approved baseline in "Baseline" and not "Baseline 1".

If you want to baseline comparison for later use, choose Tools |
Tracking, Set Baseline and copy the "Baseline" to "Baseline 1" using
"Save interim plan". Follow this step with with what is suggested by
Jim to override your existing baseline by "Selected Tasks" option

Let us know if this helps

Hi Andrea,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

If the project hasn't started, I would treat the new tasks as if they were part of the original build and just recreate the Baseline.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
