Data labels; format data series; separator

For the life of me, I can't fiture out what the separator means or is
supposed to do after I have a chart in the PPT slide and double click
on one of the bars, for example.

The Format Data Series window opens and there's an option for
"separator" -- with options such as , (comma), ; (semicolon), etc.

I can't see any effect in using these. What do they do?

If you choose more than one thing from the "label contains" list, then
whatever you choose in the separator drop-down will be used between those
two things.

For example, let's say you chose category name and value in the label list
and semicolon as the separator. Your data labels will then read like this:

1st Qtr; 20.4
1st Qtr; 30.6
1st Qtr; 45.9
2nd Qtr; 27.4

etc.
