DATA1.MSI

I have installed the SP2 for Win XP Home.

I am trying to update my installation of MS Office 2000. I get a message
that a particular feature is not avaiable, ie Pack-N-Go, and that I need to
install it. I get CD1 out and place it in the drive and an error 1731 occurs
with the text "source installation package out of sync with client package.
Followed by a DATA1.MSI error.

I tried many different possible ways of placing the CD in the drive(s). CD1
and CD2 were in the drives at the same time and I still get the DATA1.MSI
error.

I tried to uninstalling all of Office with the same DATA1.MSI error.

After a half hour of trying get "pack-n-go" loaded the errors are....

This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?

-Yes

Microsoft PowerPoint cannot install the necessary files due to Windows
installer error 1601

-OK

PowerPoint was unable to find "packngo.dll"

-crash

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you separately install Front Page, Publisher, or another "2000" series
Microsoft program after you installed Office 2000? If so, try inserting the
CD for the separate program when prompted for the data1.msi file.

No, I did not. The only thing that I did was install several Windows
updates. I have been told that the SP2 for windows XP is the cause. I dont
believe that SP2 would kill Office 2000 installation of additional features
from the CD, uninstall, and updating from the web. These are the latest
things I have tried with all resulting with a DATA1.MSI error described below.

I know that some people have problems installing Office service packs after
WinXP SP2 is installed. I suppose it's possible that WinXP SP2 is
interfering with your ability to add/remove features. You could uninstall
WinXP SP2 from Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, try to add the
desired features from the Office 2000 CD, and reinstall WinXP SP2 after that.

Another possibility: Did Office 2000 come preinstalled on your computer by
the PC manufacturer? If so, the Office 2000 version that the OEM used to
image your hard drive might not be exactly the same as the Office 2000
version that's on your CD. If this is the case, you could uninstall the
existing Office 2000 and reinstall it from your CD.

Oh yeah... if you decide to try the uninstall/reinstall route, be sure
to back up your Word template/dictionary/autocorrect files,
Excel/Powerpoint template files, Outlook .pst email files, etc., before
you uninstall.
