Database model locks up

I have Visio 2003. When I try to load a new Database Model Diagram, Visio
locks up every time. I'm running XP Professional x64. Is there something
I'm missing? Thanks for any information.

Apparently this can occur with Visio 2003 on 64-bit Windows systems, and is
related to the way that Visio reads the Printer supported paper sizes. I
understood that there was a fix on the Vista side that should avoid it - so
you might want to check that you are running Vista SP1 with the latest
updates.

Here is a work around that will help you avoid the problem:

1) new blank drawing
2) File | Print
3) cancel from the Print dialog

After doing this, database modeling documents can now be opened or created
within the current Visio session. When you close Visio and restart it,
however, you will need to do this again.

Further detail on this issue - it appears that there is a Windows level fix
in Vista x64 which alleviates the problem, but the other x64 operating
systems experience the issue (WinXP and Win2003 Server x64). I will test
in the next day or so to see if this is fixed for Windows server 2008 x64,
and let you all know.

This can'r be adressed in Visio, as the OS must be changed, so the work
around is our only method for Visio 2003 to be used with DB modeling in the
affected x64 Operating Systems.

Completed my testing, and can confirm that this is working as expected in
Windows Server 2008 x64 as well as Vista x64. Only affected platforms are
WinXP x64 and Win2003 Server x64. I don't know if there is any plan to
backport whatever was fixed in Vista/2008.

Also note, this has no impact on Visio 2007 or later, happens with Visio
2003 only.
