default home page

My site is not publishing properly; I was told

"The default page name is now "Welcom", this must
be "index.html" for the browser to display your site. "

when I check the file in FrontPage 2000, the main or home
page is named "index.html".... and the preview in browser
is working... but the first words of text on the top of
the page are "welcome to ...."

How do I check to see which page is listed as 'the
default page name' and how do I get that listed as
index.html.... thanks for the help, I am trying to
educate myself here!

With the web open in folder view, the "Home" page should be named index.html and it should display
the "Home" icon.

If you mean the text in the very top of the browser window, the text displayed there is whatever is
the "title" of the page and is what is between the <title></title> tags in html view.

OK, thanks; something funy here, in frontpage the file
was "index.htm" not ".html" I have added the "l" to the
file name and re published and removed the old file
named "index.htm" from the web and updated and re-
published, but it does still not seem to have published
properly...

specific question, what is the "home" icon, how do I know
my new file "index.html" is now the default home because
it displays that icon?

The home icon is the one that looks like a little house.

Your default Home page is the index.htm page that is in the "root" or main folder containing your
web.
If for example, the folder that contains your web is named "philsweb" it should show as a folder
with a blue globe on it.
If you open the "philsweb" folder, the file inside it named index.htm is automatically your default
or "Home" page.

The local copy can be named index.htm or index.html with it normally being index.htm.
When you publish, FrontPage queries the server for the proper name and extension required by the
server, and will automatically change the extension to .html if needed.

Any other folder in your web ( if you have made other folders to hold content ) can have a file
named index.htm however, the "only" "default home page" is the one that opens when someone clicks a
link to open your web.

That is: clicking www.yourdomain.com will automatically open the "Home page"
That's why it's called the "default"

OK, this is progress, Ihave identified the problem. The
site Iam trying to publish is in a sub folder, not on the
root directory; this is because I have two websites I
work on. The one site I have had I have no problems with,
and it is in "my documents" and them "my webs"...and the
index and all other pages are there.. but I wanted to
keep the pages for the new site separate, so I created a
sub-folder, and that is where all the pages reside. So
the path for the new site that I am having trouble
publishing is in "my documents", "my webs" and then there
is another "my web" right there where my first site pages
are, and in that is the folder I created, and in the
folder are all the files, including index....

so, how to get those files onto the root directory so
they publish properly, and yet keep them separate from
the page files for the first domain??

If you are working on two websites with their own separate "domain names," example"
www.philsweb1.com and www.phils2web.com then when you open C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My
Documents\My Webs you should see two folders with the "website" ( blue globe icon )
1 for philsweb1 and one for phils2web

I have several separate websites ( web folders ) in the My Webs folder. Each is totally separate
from the other.

a folder with blue circle; I think it was in that "MyWeb"

OK I have two sites. domains are www.all-american-
productions.com
this one is live and I am actively developing it;
new domain, also hosted and but not published is
www.clicks-4-kids.com
so, when I want to update www.all-american-
productions.com, I just open that in FrontPage, add or
modify whatever, and publish web; simple. But now I want
to creat and publish www.clicks-4-kids.com
do I just click on "creat a new web" or what? I want the
files for the two separatge domains/sites separate, but
when I tried to do that, it turned out that my second
site, clicks-4-kids was not publishing properly, because
the index file was not on the root directory, (I think
because I created a new folder) So I have deleated
everything and I'm starting over.. I need to keep the
files separate in FrontPage, but on the right directory
so they publish properly

For your new local site on your PC use File New Web/Site
and for the location select (type in_) a new top level disc based location
- say: C:\Clicks4Kids
- create your site content and use File Publish Web/Site to http://www.clicks-4-kids.com
