delayed typing in Microsoft Word 2003

We have Microsoft Word Documents stored on a shared network drive. If one
user is entering data in a document, another user could open a "read only"
version. When a read only copy is opened the "original" document become
sluggish when entering data. Is there a setting to prevent this from
occuring?
