I know how to put a sound into a PP slide show. What I would like to do
with some of the slides is have a delay of several seconds before the sound
begins to play automatically. Is there a way of controlling this?

I am using PP XP (or 2002) on Windows XP.

TIA

Go to Custom Animations > Timing and set the Delay field to a number of seconds.
