Delete key not recognized in Word 2000

With text selected, pressing the delete key once or many
times does nothing. The backspace key works immediately
unless the delete key has just been pressed, in which
case backspace takes two presses to work.

The delete key works normally on unselected text in Word,
and on selected text in a message like this one. If
anyone has a suggestion, it will be much appreciated!

Thanks, Ed

Tools => Options => General (tab)

Uncheck both options that have WordPerfect in them. (Navigation keys and WP
Help).

Open Word, click on tools/options/general then unclick any item that pertains to wordperfect.
I had inadvertently checked one box that related to WordPerfect. When I unchecked the box, the delete button worked fine.
