Deleting Section Breaks and loosing headers!

A

Al

If I'm in Section 2 of my doc, and I delete "Section Break (New page)", then
if I'm not mistaken the headers that remain in Section 2 become those that
were in Section 3!
I want to keep the headers/footers in section 2....any ideas please?

A section break stores the formatting of the *previous* section (and the
final paragraph mark of each document contains an invisible section break),
which explains what you are seeing. For instructions on preserving section
formatting when deleting section breaks, including headers and footers, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/WorkWithSections.htm.

Note that if headers and footers are the only items that you want to
preserve when deleting the section break, you can, of course, temporarily
copy them into the document body, and then copy them back into their
appropriate locations after you have deleted the break.

Unintuitively, the headers and other section-level formatting are stored in the
section break at the end of the section, not at the beginning. The final
paragraph mark of the document serves as the "section break" for the last
section.

Since you can't delete the final paragraph mark, you have to give it the same
headers as the preceding section _before_ you delete the section break that
separates the last two sections. To do that, open the header pane for the last
section and click the Same As Previous button. Now both sections have the same
header, so deleting the section break won't change the visible header.

Repeat this for the footers if they're different. Also make sure both sections
have the same margins, orientation, etc.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WorkWithSections.htm for more
details.

I've found that when I have a 'blank' last page because of a misplaced
Section Break - Next Page at the end, I can click on the very last paragraph
mark of the document and go into Page Setup - Layout and change the Section
Start from New Page to Continuous. This will at least get rid of the 'blank'
page without losing my headers and footers.
