desktop icon lost

Im using office 2003 w/XP. I have common program icons on my task bar
including the desktop icon. all of a sudden it changed to a blank icon and
when clicked it tries to search. where can i found that icon.

and, if i may, how does one alphabetize the list in Start/Programs?

Operating system issues are best asked in a operating system group. As
for "alphabetizing" that would be "sort by name", right click an entry
and pick Sort by name.
