Desktop Problem

I am on XP and have a problem with my desktop. My desktop seems to be split
into two panes and I do not know how to standardise it. All my icons etc are
on the left and this can be dragged to the left but not to the right. If I
open Word it opens on the right hand side pane.

Any ideas?

I have a sneaking suspicion that I know what the problem is. Do you know how
