Desperate: error 1918 while reinstalling microsoft office

I got the following error message while re-installing MS Office on a
new XP machine:

"While runing Microsoft Word 2000 SR-1 received ERROR 1918.
ERROR installing ODBC driver: Microsoft Text Driver
(*.txt; *.csv), ODBC error 13: Could not load the setup or
translater library. Verify that the file Microsoft Text
Driver (*.txt; *.csv) exists and that you can access it."

The MS Knowledgebase suggests reinstalling SP2 again, but SP2 has been
preinstalled, so I don't think I can re-install SP2. It also suggests
running the MDAC_TYP.EXE again (fixes ODBC problems?), but when I try
to, I get an error message saying "the setup does not support
installing on this operating system".

Any ideas before I trash everything and reinstall XP from scratch?

thanks peter. Unfortunately this didn't work. I got error messages
trying to install both exes. One error said that it wasn't the right
install for my OS (XP Home SP2). The other (MDAC) that the install
version was older than the one on my machine (I just bought it), so the
install failed. :(

Hi,

If we are working on a Win XP SP2 machine, the MDAC component is already
present(more advanced). In that case, either you could continue the
installation by clicking on 'Ignore' for 10-15 times or someone has to send
the ODBC keys from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ODBC and
restore them into your computer.

But clicking 'Ignore' for the time being will help you to continue with the
installation further and work with the Office programs.
