Determine which stencil a shape came from

Does anyone know how to determine what stencil a shape came from. I have a
template with multiple stencils. Some stencils have common shapes. I would
like to be able to determine which stencil the shape was dropped from. TIA.

I can think of two ways to do this.
1) Brute force... look at each shape in each stencil until you find the
matching shape and this indicates the stencil it came from.

2) Add the Stencil name to a Custom Prop for every Shape in the Stencil.
