Disable Check for Updates button

Simon

Hi,

Is there a way to disable "Check for Updates" button in Resources under Word
Options?
We want this button to be disabled to stop users from going to Microsoft
Update site to get the latest updates. (We deploy updates using WSUS).

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179143.aspx, "Disable user
interface items and shortcut keys", especially the section "Disable commands
with control IDs" about a quarter of the way down the page. The control ID 9340
is the same for all the Office applications.

Before doing anything, also read
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179141.aspx, "Change users'
configurations after installing the 2007 Office system".

Hi Jay,

I tried the control Id 9340 from the link that you provided (9340 is the
control ID for Check for updates). I have put that as part of the policy and
applied it but even then the "Check for Updates" button (Under Word Options -
Resources - Check for Updates)is enabled.
Anything else that I can try?

It seems that the group policy disables the control only when it's on the Quick
Access Toolbar -- I can see it work there. It has no effect on the one in the
Options dialog.

I don't know of any other tricks to try, but you might get a better answer in
the microsoft.public.office.setup newsgroup
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.office.setup).
