Disappearing clip art graphics

S

Steve

I'm running Pub 97 on a new Windows XP Pro machine (Dell
P4, 1G mem, nVidia 5700, HP laserjet and HP color
printers).

PROBLEM: Clip art graphics inserted into Publisher
documents "disappear" during some operations.

DESCRIPTION: This occurs during several types of
operations. I have opened "old" publisher documents
created on prior machines and printed them without
problem; however, when I change default printers, the
graphics sometimes "disappear". This occurs regardless
of whether I respond yes or no to the reset objects
dialogue. When I insert new art, it will "disappear"
upon some print operations and some save operations. It
will sometimes happen on a page-by-page basis. The
outline of the graphic remains visable, and can be moved,
sized, etc.; content, however, is gone.

SPECULATION A: This could be some kind of OLE linking
issue, which may be triggered by an internal refresh or
reassessment of the document relationships upon a print
or save operation. It may be a function of the way NT
based systems, such as XP, handle the OLE objects.

SPECULATION B: This could be a function of printer
driver issues, if Publisher is using the printer driver
specs in some manner to determine how to display the
graphics. Since the graphic disappears and is
effectively "lost" to the user, regardless of whether an
actual print occurs, however, this would be a rather
serious error. In my case and the "artkid" post below,
the issue is tied to the use of WinXP, which would
require new printer installations. Nonetheless, even if
the program encountered a driver incompatibility caused
by a swap in drivers, you would not expect the result to
be a complete loss of the object link.

NOTES: Scanning the posts, I note that several prior
posts note this problem, without real answer:

The issue you describe is unknown as a fault in any version of Publisher.

The type of issue you describe has usually been attributed to video drivers.

The reset object only take the printers page layout metrics prior to
Publisher versions 2000.

You mean it is unknown, except for the 4 different user
posts in the last 3 weeks with same problem. Other than
that, it is unknown.

If you are correct that Publisher XP and 2003 do not
perform some operation with printer spec in the same
manner, than I should be able to upgrade to those
Publisher editions and fix the issue. I will try that.

Steve while there may appear to be the same issues, they are not, and as
Murphy will have it, you get a run of the similar issues at once that are
previously never heard off.

Having the same problems when printing here. Pub 97 on Win2k. It does seem to make a difference if you say "no" to the update embedded objects question, but not all the time. After pressing print the printout has either no pictures or some pictures missing, and the pictures disappear in the document. YES, disappear. They leave an empy picture box.

Go to the manufacturer's web site of your printer and graphics card and look around
for newer drivers.

Maz post some new questions. What you have replied to means nothing as it
comes to the newsgroups without the original questions.
