Outlook 2002 does not allow me to select existing members from my address book into my newly created distribution list. All I see when I attempt to select a member is a comma or semi colon

You've left out vital information.
How did you create these contacts?
It sounds to me as if you imported them, and did so incorrectly.
Provide more details.
