divide large document into smaller docs

I have to edit a large manual, 400 pages, and would lke to
divide it into smaller docs before editing.

How do I break a large file into smaller ones and keep the
format intact?

I think word has keyboard commands to split files, does
anyone knwo where I can get a copy of this info??
