Do functions work on filtered data in Excel?

What's up with that?

I filtered out rows in an Excel sheet and now want to calculate the average
of the filtered numbers. The function still calculates ALL rows, not only
the filtered ones.

Thanks for your help. I found the online help after specifying the SUBTOTAL
function.
