Document switches to "read-only" when existing links are edited.

When we try to edit existing links in a word document, the
document switches to "read-only". Any solutions out
there?

You didn't mention which version of Word and which OS you
are using, but unless it is a protected document, it is a
bug in Word 2000 on Windows XP, and quite possibly other
combinations. It may or may not be documented, but it is
surely a bug. Close the document and reopen it. If that
does not work, make the changes and Save As with a new
name.
