If you want to buy Office, do so _now_. You will of course get
11(sometimes called 2003), which is a must-have in my opinion. Usually
MS offers a discount for those who upgrade from one version to the
next, so your money won't be completely wasted. And the months of use
you get from 11 will be well worth it.

Then again, I can't guarantee MS will give you an upgrade-discount.
If you want to hold off for a while, just get the freebee:

And you don't want 12 beta pre-release now anyway. It's months away
from being a finished product (if such a thing is possible). Right now,
it's so buggy (so I've heard), nobody but an experienced user
should attempt it.

I’ve never used a trial version of an MS product, so it didn’t occur to
me when I was responding to OP. Going to that page, is seems MS has a
complicated strategy of what to allow at trial and what not. There must
be some logic to it.

I thought the try-online versions were clever. I don’t know how that’s
done. The response it a little slow, but they work. I’ll have to look
again to see if you can email the finished files – I doubt it.

And what’s this with the dinosaur heads? The idea is that the old
fashioned way of doing things (the non-MS way, apparently) is extinct.
But those heads are instructing us about MS products. Maybe I got the
symbolism wrong. Maybe MS is saying it’s now taking after Mozilla?

BTW, look at this Google Group: http://groups.google.com/group/Office-12
