Draw tools disappear

When I click on a draw tool from the Drawing toolbar, it does not stay active
but for a second. If I click on a tool, like the rectangle tool, and quickly
(within a second)draw a rectangle in a document, it works. However, if I
click on the tool, it displays the "+" and then reverts back to text insert
mode within a second and I can't draw anything. I don't see any settings
that pertain to this. Can anyone help?

Thanks

This sounds as if there may be an Add-in or some other software that's
triggering the mode reversion...

1. If you double-click a Drawing button, that should "lock" it on until you
press Esc or click it again. Does that work correctly?

2. Which version of Word is this? We need to check whether putting Word in Safe
Mode corrects the behavior.

3. You should also start Windows in Safe Mode and see if the problem goes away
during the duration of that session.
