Drawing Canvas - How to get rid of

Hi all - Word 2002 XP - Windows ME

Is there any way to disable the drawing canvas to keep it from coming up
every time I want to add a text box? It is a pain to have to work with the
canvas thingie all the time just to add in a text box or a shape.

I have tried to find a Help file to deal with this, but can't find anything
on how to disable it. I may not be using the right term or something.

I would truly appreciate any suggestions on how to disable this feature.
