Drawing Canvas VS. Text Box

In running Word 2002, when I try to create a text box,
Word will also create a drawing canvas around the text box
and will limit the placement within this canvas. My Word
98 did not do this, and I want to be able to drag the text
box anywhere on the document. Is there a way to turn the
drawing canvas off?

Clear the check box for "Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting
AutoShapes" on the General tab of Tools | Options.
