Duplicate Copies

I have Windows XP, with Office 2000 and its update (SR-1a). System has
crashed twice in six months, both resulting in re-installing the O.S. Today
I installed the Office 2000 update hoping this old version was the culprit.
Everytime I open either a Word or Excel file, a DUPLICATE is automatically
made. In past history, this occurs just before a crash. Help!

You should install SP 2 for XP if not done already and SP3 for Office 2000,
not stopping at SR1a.

Don't know if this will solve your problems totally but it may.

Thank you. I did install both updates, of which I was not aware. Now when I
open a Word document only one duplicate appears, not two additional ones that
begin with WRL. I still need to resolve the situation.

The one duplicate you are talking about - does it's filename begin with a ~$
with the first two letters of the filename dropped? If so this is the
temporary file that is created by the program as it's work area. It should
be deleted whenever the file is closed. If the program crashes this file
may be leftover and isn't deleted. You should delete the file manually
after Word is successfully closed after a program crash and an attempted
restart of Word to recover the file.

If the file is the same name with a .bak extension (you need to have "Hide
extensions for known file types" turned off in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder
Options/View to see the extensions. This is because "Always create backup
copy" is turned on in Word/Tools/Options/Save tab

There may be other reasons for a copy of a file. If these two didn't hit
the spot, reply again.
