Duration Differences

Can anyone help....

I am using project 2002 on Windows XP and I am seeing
strange things with duration.

If I specify a start date of a monday and specify a
duration of 4 weeks I would expect the finish date to the
friday of week 4. However, it sets itself to the Thursday.
If I force the finish date to be the Friday, the duration
changes to 4.25 weeks.

I've also seen instances where I have specified a task to
have 2 days and it looks as though the task starts midway
through a day which it shouldn't...

Does anyone know what I've been doing wrong?

All help gratefully received because at the moment my
plans are showing incorrect dates!

Cheers

Hi Ann,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Have you changed the working hours or calendars? If so, please see FAQ Item:
5. Default Working Hours. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project
information can be seen at this web address: http://www.mvps.org/project/

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Hi Mike,

I've had a look at the mvps site and gone through the
instructions and I can't see anything wrong.

Each day (monday to friday) is set to 7.5 hours (8:30 -
12:00 and 13:00 - 17:00) with a 37.5 hour week.

Any other hints or tips would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi there,

Yes I have checked the Calendar option as stated in the
calendar option and it shows:

Week: Monday
Fiscal Year: January
Start Time: 08:30
End time: 17:00
Hours Per Day: 7.50
Hours Per Week: 37.50
Days per month: 20

and still no joy!

Any other tips?

Cheers

Anne - that's NOT changing the calendar options (never mind that is says it
is). You need to go to the Tools menu, select Change Working Time and
modify the calendar there to reflect the actual hours during the day and
days of the week that work takes place. What you have changed so far are
some conversion factors and the times that Project will supply as default
when dates are entered manualy without including times in the entry. You
haven't changed the times of the work day or the number of hours in a work
week at all. The actual work calendar is probably still showing a 40 hour
work week 8-12 and 1-5. That's why the discrepancy you're seeing. The best
practice, IMHO, is to use Tools ChangeWorkingTime to define the work
calendar, then go to that calendar options page and bring it into conformity
with the calendar. But it's vital to remember that changing the options
DOES NOT change the calendar.
