e-mail problem

I am using WindowsXP and Outlook 2002 (SP-2). Some days our e-mail works
fine
but more often then not mail delivery is interrupted. We do not have any
problems sending mail, only receiving. Some days we'll recieve hundreds of
messages (mostly spam) without a glitch. The next day, or possibly later
the same day, I'll get 10-12 messages and then a dialog box pops up asking
for username and password. I cancel out of this dialog box and get an
error message that, " the connection to the server was interrupted."

The auto e-mail send/receive is set at 25 minutes.

Norton Internet Security, Firewall Security set to medium. Program Control,
Microsoft Outlook - Access is Automatic & Category is Multiple. NAV
Auto-Protect, Email Scanning & Script Blocking are all On.

We're in a small office on Peer-to-peer. 4 PC's with 2 having problems. The
two having problems are Dell's running XP professional, Outlook 2002 SP-2
and Norton Internet Security 2003. Of the two not having problems one is a
Compaq running XP professional, Outlook 2000 SP-1 and NIS 2002. The other
is a Gateway running Win98, Outlook 2000 and NIS 2000.

I have been in contact with tech support at our server, but they say it is
not a problem with there equipment. It's got to be in the settings, but we
can't figure out where because it works sometimes, but not all the time.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
