Email authentication problem

R

Randy Bynon

I just switched to Mac and started using Entourage for my email. I have a
Bellsouth account. I set it up and can send and receive just fine. But I
also have two other mail accounts. I set those up to receive via their
proper POP3 servers and I set up the SMTP as my bellsouth account using the
appropriate settings under SMTP server settings. Works great in Outlook on
my PC. But on my Mac, I get the following error when I try to send email
using one of these other two accounts:

Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available
authentication methods.

I searched the MS KB and found a reference from mid-2004 that basically says
it¹s a known issue. Bellsouth says it¹s a problem with Entourage. Anyone
have any solutions to this?

Under SMTP "Advanced sending options", did you set Authentication? Try
first with nothing selected. Next try SMTP server requires authentication.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

I, too, now have this problem. As I am not an expect I have found it
extremely frustrating to purchase a new bit a software and then find it
doesn't work.

I've attempted to check my smtp options but nothing seems to help.
Autentication still won't allow me to receive and I haven't confirmed that I
can send.

Any other ideas?

You don¹t mention what kind of account that you have.

Has anyone solved this? I get no help from Bellsouth. I have used Entourage
with this account for ~1 year, with no issues until last week, when now I can
no longer send any message with an attachment, or that is a reply, or that
includes any links - i just time out. When I select SMTP authentication, I
get the following error message:

Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available
authentication methods.

There is an existing bulletin (from 2004) that says Entourage no longer
supports NTLM 1 authentication (whatever that means). All I know is that
last week I was able to send/receive (and when I use Outlook Express by
booting to Windows partition using Boot Camp), I am also able to send/receive
normally.

You still didn't mention why type of account you are using. What happens if
you zip the files?

See what Entourage is saying to your ISP when you try to send.

Here are the short and simple instructions on using tcpflow:

1. Download the Mac OS X version here (freeware).

cosx/#tcpflow>

2. When you install, you will not find a tcpflow window, nor an icon on
your dock. tcpflow is designed to work in the background.

3. To run the test for email, quit all other applications that might be
connecting to the internet like your browser, ftp client.

4. Copy/paste in this command in the Terminal:

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -i en0 -c

5. Now try to send an email and watch the traffic in the window of the
Terminal. You should see what is happening.

6. For an example see this page:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html#example>

You are speaking a completely different language than I understand. My
account "type" (as you request - and as I stated above) is a Bellsouth POP
account.

I have no idea what you are talking about with installing a TCPflow. I
simply was able to send/receive email Thursday (including attachments,
replies, forwards) and now I can't (only from Entourage - if I boot to
Windows and use Outlook Express, everything is fine).

I get the error message listed below. I want to belive i am not the only
person (there are at least 2 others on this thread and 10 more on a Aplle
discussion forum having this issue all of a sudden).

You mentioned it was a Billsouth account but I didn't see that it was POP

There is a problem in your Entourage settings. Using tcpflow shows what is
failing. For example, if your password is xxxyyyzzz, but you entered it
incorrectly, tcpflow would show you something like this: (for this example I
changed my password to "thisistest" so I could make the account fail)

You'll see that the ISP likes my User name and says OK, but when it gets to
the password it fails.

We are seeing problems like this when ISPs add security settings. Usually,
then send out an announcement to make the necessary changes. You might need
to add Advanced SMTP settings to make it work again.

If you use tcpflow, then you will see exactly what is failing and we can
help you or your ISP can direct you on what to change.

One last thing. Have you deleted the account. Not erased and re-entered the
info, but delete it and create it new from scratch. Also check your keychain
for the account password and delete it there also.

You are just wrong. There is nothing wrong with my settings, they have
worked flawlessly for over a year. i have removed and rentered them 50 times
since Thursday. Apparently there is an issue with Entourage NOT SUPPORTING
Bellsouth's authentication any longer. This is NOT my issue. I am looking
for someone who can help me resolve without overly-simplistic "tyr
re-entering your password" type help. i have linked to a Microsoft KNOWN
issue from 2004. I have referenced LOTS of other people suddenly experiencing
the same issue. Surely we all did not suddenly mess up our authentication
individually. Microsoft's support for Entouage is just awful. There isn't
even a knowledge base with simple answers - just this usenet group......

Sorry for my negative tone, but I am not a network engineer, and the string
you pasted below is alien to me.

This URl is to the Bellsouth support site - note - they tell you how to set
up authentication for virtually EVERY email client there is, excpet for
Entourage, they have basic install information, which works fine - except if
i have an attacment or reply or forward.

Removing is not always the same as deleting.

I'm sure Entourage will be able to download your email, but the correct
setting will need to be entered.

I messed around and found a back way into the site. It appears they detect
you are not a customer and make it difficult to use the site. You can't call
or email them either without an account.

I found this page:

How To: Set Up Your BellSouth E-mail Account Using Entourage on a Mac

In the Incoming mail server field, type mail.bellsouth.net.
In the Outoing (SMTP) mail server field, type mail.bellsouth.net.

Click on the Advanced Sending tab:
In the next window, make sure that the SMTP server requires authentication
option is NOT checked.
Make sure that the Use same settings as receiving mail sever option IS
checked.

Click OK

If you still have problems, create a new User in System Preferences. Open
Entourage and enter your account into there in a new blank Entourage
Identity. Does it work there? Remember to set the account to leave mail on
server so you can have access to your email when you go back to your regular
account.

What instructions did they give you to add the SMTP authentication?

Are they similar to the AT&T Yahoo - New Security Settings? See this page
for the new security setting for the Yahoo accounts. It might help give you
clues on what to do for your setup.

Diane,

thanks, but unfortunately, this doesn't solve it either. They did not give
me any SMTP settings, as you can see from the link I sent you, their site
does not have any Entourage SMTP Authentication settings. I simply used the
ones that work for Outlook, Outlook Express and Mac Mail and tried to use
those, to no avail.

If you could get them to contact me, I could see what I could find out to
put up on the Entourage Help Page. Since I don't have an account there,
there is no way for me to test settings. Their web interface doesn't allow
you to email them unless you have an account with them.

I know it scares you to use tcpflow, but it's not as difficult as it seems.
You install and run it and that's about it. I think it would give you
valuable info.

You could try another application I ran into recently that does the same
thing but has a different interface.
