following,we have a win 2003 server an a small number of
xp machines, we would like to download all employees
emails to the server and then they can access there
emails from there workstation, what would be the best way.

Depends upon what else you need. Just for simple e-mail why not let your
small number of XP machines share an Internet connection and POP their
e-mail from an ISP using Outlook or Outlook Express?

If you have more complicated needs then you'll need a more complicated
solution -- perhaps Exchange with Outlook clients.

Would like all emails to be backed up on the server, and
be able to synchronize online and off.
All machines are part of a domain.

Backed up for disaster recovery or backed up for long-term archival?

If just for disaster recovery you could just POP to an ISP. I'm sure the
major ISPs back up their servers pretty regularly. You could configre OL or
OE to leave a copy of the messages on the server.

If you need an internal solution then Exchange is one way to go; though it
might be overkill. There are probably some smaller POP/SMTP-only server
solutions out there, but I have to confess I'm not that familiar with them.
