Email sent from iPhone not syncing correctly in Entourage

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

I have Office for Mac 2008 and use Entourage with Exchange. I also use ActiveSync on Exchange to sync my iPhone. When I send an email from the iPhone and check the "Sent" folder in Entourage, there is no name or subject on the synced email.

When I open the email in the "Sent" folder (again, this is the email I actually sent from my iPhone), it's all garbled. Sometimes the body of the message is able to be read, but sometimes not.

Help!

Thank you!

I do not believe this to be an Exchange issue, since this only happens in Entourage.

I can open Outlook, Outlook Web or Mac Mail and messages are all there in the correct format.

This issue has been around before the iPhone. Windows Mobile devices' sent items appear this way in Entourage as well (Blackjack), but are fine in Outlook and Outlook Web.

As a matter of fact, I just performed a few experiments.

If you move your sent items using either Outlook or OWA, to another folder and then back, the messages sent from iPhone now appear correct in Entourage. How funny is that?

But it you move those "no subject" email using Entourage, they now appear as "no subject" email in Outlook and OWA. This is particularly bad if you use Entourage to move sent items around.

A work around that I have found it to create a folder in Exchange, like "sent from iphone". Create a rule Outlook to copy each message sent from the iphone to the new folder. These messages will be CORRECTLY displayed in Entourage in the new folder.

Note:If you create the rule in Entourage it will NOT work. Entourage is the problem.

From Entourage, you can delete the 'no subject" emails and replace them with email in the "sent from iphone" folder if needed.

Stuarts,

You're brilliant! I tried the same test and you're totally correct! I'm wondering how you set that rule to just isolate the emails sent from the iPhone? This would be worth even setting up a new "sent" folder and forwarding all email.

Very nice! I appreciate your help very much!

Well, this is fascinating. I set-up a new sub folder in the Sent folder, then set a rule to bcc me when I sent an email from the iPhone and place it in this folder.

Works brilliantly. Thank you again for your help!

My signature has a "sent from iphone" statement in it. I set the rule to key on this statement.

Now if we could only get Entourage BU to fix this issue.....

I am disappointed to see that Entourage has not admitted to their problem, much like an alcoholic.

If this were an Exchange issue, then Outlook and OWA would also exhibit these same issues as well, but for the majority of us, they don't.

Why is it that, we can move those iphone email from the sent folders, to another folder and then back, using Outlook or rules in Outlook, and then they display just fine in Entourage? Hmmm....

Or if this is indeed an Exchange issue, how did Outlook and OWA work around this issue and be able to display the files correctly.

Well this is a peer support group. Who do you want to see admit a
problem??
MS doesn't usually post here.

On the other hand, I'm not even sure it is an Entourage issue. It could
just as well be an issue with the OWA server not passing the e-mails
properly in a format all clients can get.

You are incorrect in your assumption. The problem is with ActiveSync in
Exchange.

The only reason Entourage exhibits the problem is because it is the only
mail application that connects to Exchange via WebDAV. Outlook connects
via MAPI and will not show this behavior.

The Exchange Server group at Microsoft has seen fit not to fix this
problem in Exchange Server 2003 but has done so in Exchange Server 2007.

Hmmm. The address I use in Outlook is the same as the one I use in Entourage, mail.company.com. That doesn't look like the HTTPS address that OWA uses. Although, either could be used with Entourage, but the outcome is the same.

Let's speculate here for a second... If the issue is, as you say ActiveSync, why is it that ONLY Entourage is effected? Why wouldn't this effect my WM devices or even my iPhone, it downloads the mail from ActiveSync as well.

Whatever tool is at fault, I am sure this came down to what makes sense from a business perspective, make them upgrade to ES2007 ($) or fix Entourage (no $). Which would you pick?

Enough said.

Outlook uses MAPI, Entourage (2008) uses WebDAV (OWA) and the iPhone
uses ActiveSync.
If the server has problems with only one of the protocols, then only one
of the apps is affected.

Because it could be a problem reflecting the ActiveSync-generated
modifications over OWA (which I suspect it is - e-mails don't have the
proper format).

I pick: patch the Exchange 2003 server for free first. A LOT of servers
are not keeping perfectly up to date with the patches.

I answered that already. It's in your reply above.

Nothing is broken in Entourage. Nothing there to "fix". The folks at
MacBU simply opted not to create a work around in Entourage for a
problem that exists in a different product.

You can argue with me all you like but I have met in person with the
MacBU folks and discussed this with them. I won't comment on their
motivations for not addressing this in Entourage but I can tell you that
my comments above regarding where this problem lies are technically
correct. You can choose to believe me or not. That's your prerogative.

I find this ridiculous. For me it seems for the Entourage developers it is
more important their technological pride, than serve the users. I doubt it
would be too difficult to make a patch what would hide this glitch of the
ActiveSync in the case of need, and everybody would be happy...

Really, if it were easy, then it would have already happened.
