email stuck in the outbox cannot send new email messages

I have a corrupted message in my outbox. I probably started sending the
message and then shut down windows. The message is italicised in the out
box, but it does not get sent and cannot be deleted. I do not want to loose
all of my saved emails, but cannot send any messages at this point, only
receive them.
