Embedded .gif shown as red X in outlook 2003

I am trying to use a signature file in Outlook 2003 that
will not display the .gif that I have inserted unless I
use word as the email editor. When I start a new email,
it inserts the signature but the .gif file just shows as a
box with a red X.... any ideas?
