A friend of mine stated that I could enlarge an image using Publisher to make
a pattern for a wood cutout of the image...Is this true, and how do I go
about doing it...

Thanks In Advance...

Depends on what kind of an image you have. Basically you can enlarge any
image - no guarantees about the quality of the results tho.

BMP, GIF or JPG

How do I go about enlarging it to approximately 24" X 36"???

=======================================
File / Page Setup / Custom...enter the size and
orientation.

Insert your diagram and drag the corner handles
to the size you require...the ruler guides will help
you size it correctly.

The project will be printed on several sheets and
you will have to assemble it unless you have access
to a large format printer.

....and unless it's very high resolution, it will be horribly pixellated.
That shouldn't really matter, though, if you're just making a wooden cutout
from it.

Can you print something that large?

You don't need Publisher to do that. If it was me, I'd use a graphics
program. For example Photoshop Elements.

I like to print oversized pictures occasionally
and Publisher works fine for me. Once the
pages are assembled the pictures look great.
Not as good as a professional print of course
but they don't cost $30 to $40 each either.
