Enter Network Password request when closing linked Word document

On my company Intranet, we have a link to a Word document that opens in a
new window. It opens up fine, but when you try to close it, you get a
dialog box asking for the network username, password and domain. This
happens without modifying anything. You can hit cancel, but it's annoying,
and sometimes confusing to the user. "Everyone" has browsing permissions on
the web and on the intranet file folder.

Any ideas why I might be getting this network password prompt?

Are your intranet users running Office 2000? If so, they need to apply
Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a)
