Enterprise fields VS Views

Andrea

Hi,

I have created a custom Enterprise Project Text field in Global Enterprise
of Project Professional. I saved my enterprise global and close MS Project
and reopen it. When I open one of my project, I can add the field I've
created in the Gantt Chart view, but it is not possible to insert this field
in the Resource Usage view.

Is there a way to create a custum field that will be able insertable in each
views of MsProject Pro ?

Thanks
Andrea

If you create a custom enterprise Task field, you can insert it into a Task
view, such as the Gantt Chart view. If you create a custom enterprise
Resource view, you can insert it into a Resource view, such as the Resource
Usage view. You cannot insert a Task field into a Resource view, and vice
versa. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I still don't understand something. For example, the field Actual Work, I
can insert it wherever I want. I know it is not a customizable field, but I
think that I should add a custom field wherever I want to. There is not an
option like "General Field" that must be used in Gantt Chart view as well as
in Resource or Task Usage views?

Thanks for you help.

There is a Task field called Actual Work and a Resource field called Actual
Work. That's why you think that Actual Work is a general field that can be
placed anywhere. They are actually two different fields. My original
answer still stands. You can only place Task fields in Task views, and
Resource fields in Resource views. Hope this helps.

Dale,

I too have the same problem as Andrea.
I was wondering though: if I enter actual work in the resource usage view,
it will automatically be updated in a task view like the Gantt chart for
example. How come? Are the two Actual Work fields somehow
linked/synchronized?

Thanks for your help!

Good question. Consider the following scenario:

1. I assign Mickey, Sarah, and Dave to Task A at 100% Units and 40 hours of
Work.
2. The resource Work field calculates 40 hours of Work for Mickey, 40 hours
for Sarah, and 40 hours for Dave.
3. The task Work field calculates 120 hours of total Work for Task A (the
total of the resource Work values).
4. Mickey submits 40 hours of Actual Work for Task A, Sarah submits 30
hours, and Dave submits 10 hours.
5. The resource Actual Work field calculates 40 hours of Actual Work for
Mickey, 30 hours for Sarah, and 10 hours for Dave.
6. The task Actual Work field calculates 80 hours of Actual Work on Task A
(the total of the resource Actual Work values)

So, yes, the fields are "linked" in a sense, since the task Work field is
the total of the resource Work field values for the resources assigned to
the task. The same goes with the Actual Work fields as well. Thanks for
asking!

Dale,

If this is the case, then would it be possible to create a custom task field
and a custom resource field and link them together, the way the Work fields
are "linked"?

How are the Work fields linked? And the Actual Work fields? Is there an
option where we can set the linking between a task field and a resource field?

Thanks again!

Out of curiosity, what are you trying to accomplish? The Microsoft Project
Data Model governs the behavior of task, resource, and assignment fields.
Here's how the Data Model works:

Task fields are displayed in task Views, Tables, Filters, and Groups.
Resource fields are displayed in resource Views, Tables, Filters, and
Groups.
Assignment fields are only displayed in the Task Usage or Resource Usage
views.

Hope this helps.
