Entourage 2008 error -8738

Hi Group,

All of a sudden, my Entourage 2008 cannot connect to the exchange
server anymore and gives me error -8738.

Tried:
- Entourage 2008, new identity, same OSX account: same error
- Rebuild the database: same error
- Remove & reinstall Office 2008: same error
- Entourage 2004, new identity, same OSX account: works like a breeze
- Entourage 2008, new identity, NEW OSX account: works like a breeze

I'm stumped. It seems that it is specifically Entourage 2008 in
combination with a specific OSX account. So *something* is tripping up
that combination.

First off: can anyone pretty pretty please tell me what error -8738
actually means? Doctor Google isn't very specific about it,
unfortunately...

Secondly, can anyone please point me to a guide on how to -really-
remove Office 2008? The remove office app apparently leaves behind
some residue (for example: after the reinstall I did not have to enter
the license code, o it still 'knew' that wrom sokmewhere).

Thirdly, same question, but now specifically on Entourage 2008...

TIA, cheers from The Netherlands,
Jurgen

Yeah, it's not even on the Entourage error page:

I found a page that amde references to Monolingual. Did you use it? (or
any other app that removes localized resources)

I would still definitively use the uninstaller. What's left behind is
what is considered to be User files (custom dictionaries, preferneces,
e-mails, etc). Not sure the uninstaller should remove these...

Indeed, much to my shagrin...

Saw that as well. Nope, don't use it (or any other in that regard).

I just want to cross off possibilities in tracking this curlpit. I
want to make sure that, indeed after having used the uninstaller,
truly all traces of Office 2008/Entourage 2008 are gone (the user data
will have been backed up). Next, I want to do a brand new install of
Office 2008. IF <Entourage_performance == flawless > THEN <problem ==
solved> ELSE <me == stumped!>

If that ELSE were to come about, I know the problem is not Entourage
related, but (most likely) OSX.

Merci pour ton aide...

This tells me that's it's a problem in your User's account and that it
involves the Entourage 2008 preferences. Look for the Microsoft folder in
preferences and remove the ones for 2008. If that doesn't get the corrupt
preferences, then remove all preferences that have Microsoft in the name.

See this page on "Remove Office". It goes into detail on what you will have
to manually remove to do a fresh install.

Thanks for the info. Tried both: no effect.
See this page on "Remove Office". It goes into detail on what you will have

Again: no effect.

I'm now very much inclined to believe it's not Entourage's fault at
all but -something- in OSX (that's a novelty! It's Steve's fault; not
Bill's ;->). Another hint in that direction is that, again all of a
sudden, my MobileMe syncing is acting up (on address book) under this
particular OSX user account (!?).

Anyways, I've given up on hunting this one down: life's too short.
I've set up a brand new OSX user account, under which everything is
operating as it should be (including mobileme syncing & using the
transferred original Main identity in Entourage 2008). It now only
costs me some time to re-create my working environment under the new
OSX user account. Once that's all done, I'll just delete the OSX user
account that's been giving me this headache the past few days...

Thanks y'all for the help & detailed info!

Cheers,
Jurgen

After the uninstaller is done, trash all com.microsoft preferences as
well as the Microsoft folder in the Preferences. It should take care of
it.

The user data might be in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data as well as in
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft

If that ELSE were to come about, I know the problem is not Entourage
related, but (most likely) OSX.

Use a test user account. It will have nne of your preferences or user
data...
