Entourage crashes when on line (no mail being received or sent)

Henry Seiden

Hello All,

I've been having issues with crashing on my laptop and I recently saw the
thread " Re: Entourage Database corrupted three times", which has similar
but not identical circumstances. Actually this is being sent from my desktop
since Entourage won¹t stay running enough online to do anything.

Here's my situation. I did a bunch of stuff (itemized below). Now Entourage
when online crashes after a few minutes regardless of whether it¹s checking
or sending mail. Events prior to failure:
1. I recently went to iSync of my Entourage database (Addressbook).
2. Update of Entourage to 11.2.4

What I did to troubleshoot:
1. Set to Offline mode to check if quits. It doesn¹t.
2. Verify Database integrity. It¹s OK.
3. Repair OS X (startup) partition disk permissions. No problems fixed
except secure.log.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Henry

If it¹s not crashing when you work offline, it is likely to be a corrupt
piece of mail (probably malformed spam) in the server side in box.

Can you access the mail server through a web interface and clean out the
queue that way?

If not, write back for more info, butl et us know what type of account (POP,
IMAP etc, who is it with...)

H

Henry Seiden

1. I trashed all messages in the queue (sent and received) via web mail in
the server of this POP account- several were spam (no attachments).
2. As soon as I turned on this one account in Account Settings, (previously
had them all off - the menu check box Œset to Send & Receive¹) the program
crashed. Is that what you mean?
3. It keeps crashing while one account is enabled with Entourage On line,
without doing anything else.
4. Conversely, with all accounts set to not send and receive automatically,
and with the Online setting checked, not doing anything else, the program
does seem to crash just sitting there, but it takes longer for that to
happen.
5. Manually receiving mail on any one account (of four accounts as above)
does the same crash immediately.

Anything else to try? Empty identity?

H

Henry Seiden

Forgot to mention one activity that occurs at points before the crash-
server. It is accessing the server synchronizing projects (contacts or
tasks, I think) around the time of the crash. Is this a problem? Does this
have something to do with Sync Services?

Before you try an empty identity, delete that account and make a new one. As
its a POP account, nothing will be lost.

See if that cures the problem.

1. Deleted the default account- a POP account while working off line so as
to keep Entourage running.
2. The IMAP account (mac.com) became the default account.
3. Enabled work Online.
4. Did not crash for 5 minutes. Also did not attempt to sync projects (for
some reason).
5. Eventually, when it did try to sync projects, Entourage quit while
syncing tasks with nothing else going on (according to the status at the
bottom of the window).

How many shared projects do you have?

So, if you don¹t share those, does the crashing stop?

If so, what sort of servers are they shared to?

Two.

H

Henry Seiden

I simply share my project¹s contacts and calendar to a desktop partition.
Will observe the failure rate of one online account (IMAP) and no sharing or
other accounts and report back.

Entourage did not crash when left on all day (doing nothing). I
enabled/recreated my accounts and it still did not crash. I then checked
mail repeatedly and it didn¹t crash either. So I suppose it¹s the project
synchronization that¹s the issue...

B

Barry Wainwright [MVP]

OK, project sync doesn¹t normally cause a crash, so there must be something
specific about your set up.

Can you try sharing just one of the projects and see if that causes a crash,
then (after a day or so to prove the matter) try the other project.

If the crash occurs with just one project, it¹s likely there is some corrupt
data in the project. It may suffice to delete the shared store (but remember
to save a copy so you can get to any shared files!) and let it be created
when you re-share the project, or it may be necessary to delete the project
and recreate it.

Please let us know what you find...

Not from inside Entourage, but any files you have added to the project may
have been moved to the project share folder, so don¹t throw it away yet!

Isn¹t the data going to be lost if I do this?

H

Henry Seiden

OK.
1. My desktop has no problem with the shared projects.
2. I re-subscribed to the share at the correct location and got a spinning
wheel (of impending doom)when do so. I checked the location before starting.
3. The bottom of the window says Calendar Events. The program is un
responsive. Now what?
4. Quit.

B

Barry Wainwright [MVP]

First time you share a project it can take a while to carry out the first
sync especially if there is a lot of data to be synced. It _shouldn¹t tie
up Entourage, but it all too often does. It¹s worth leaving it a while and
seeing if control returns after a while.

OK, there is a lot of data I guess. But it sure is taking longer than it
used to in 11.0.x or earlier. Is the spinning wheel over the window an
indication of this in OS X? The status indicator is frozen as well. I don¹t
remember that either.

I¹ll try sharing out the other project which is a smaller size and let you
know.

H

Henry Seiden

A lot of things Œtie up¹ Entourage. I gave up trying to count them. Try
sorting an address list for a totally unrelated example. Over 200 items and
your in for a wait. Or in a mailbox folder.

One of the biggest failings of Entourage is that it doesn¹t tell you what
it¹s doing during those times of being tied up. Many functions seemingly do
nothing, the onscreen activity seems to freeze, followed by the function
having been accomplished magically.

I realize the reason why this is so, however as a user, it is frustrating
not to get feedback and for an app go so slowly on an otherwise speedy
platform as to Œhang¹ the operation of the app. Mail doesn¹t do this at all
(while it may have other drawbacks).

Just my 2¢...

Not trying to rant here, there are lots of good things about Entourage as
compared with other mail clients. Just a pet peeve that you can pass on or
not, as you prefer.

H

Henry Seiden

Apparently one my two projects has a problem when attempting to subscribe to
it from my laptop. It was shared by the desktop computer to a root partition
of it¹s drive.

My desktop shares it with no trouble and no failures. I am not deleting the
shared data. Is there some way I could somehow reset it or fix it on the
laptop¹s end while keeping the data that¹s on the server (contacts and
calendars)?
