Entourage v Office X greys out at bottom of inbox/sent box list...

Version: v.X
Processor: Power PC

I have tolerated a problem on my Entourage for ages (years!), and have finally decided to try to solve it!

I have a G4 Mac, running Office X for Mac. My Entourage mostly works well apart from occasionally it will start to 'grey/black out' emails in the inbox and sent box, and also sometimes the 6 little squares at the top of the main window. Very strange, they black out one by one, and then the whole thing stops working.

Also, when I press send/receive button, cursor has to be positioned on the sent box, otherwise messages will not enter the inbox! (error message comes up something like ' operation cannot be completed'). If I then click on inbox, once messages are in, everything is OK. But this is a bit annoying! Like I say, I like Entourage, but thinking of changing to Mail or something else if this can't be resolved. Can anyone help?

Do I need to upgrade to a newer version with system fixes? Is there a free upgrade somewhere to download? Many thanks.

I replied to you in another thread. You have database corruption.

Upgrade v.s. Update

If you don't need Exchange you can get Office 2008 very reasonably. $118.49

However, I must warn you that because your database is so corrupted you will
not be able to import the data using the Setup Assistant. You will need to
export as MBOX files and tab delimited files from Entourage X, THEN import
those files into Entourage 2008.

Thank you, Diane. Excuse my ignorance, could you explain what tabbing delimited files from Entourage X means?

Also, I have tried to export my current emails in my inbox and sent box by dragging to the desktop, but both mbox files created are both 0kbs in size. Is that right?

Thirdly, I am running Office X on OS 10.3.9. What is the highest version of Office I can use on 10.3.9.

And do you think it worth me updating to version 10.1.9 of Office? Will it solve my 'greying out' problem? Or shall I just stick where I am until I buy a new Mac. (If it ain't broke, too badly, don't fix it!)

Thank you, Diane. Excuse my ignorance, could you explain what tabbing
delimited files from Entourage X means?

It's a type of text file that separates the values.

Tab delimited files are one way to import and place data that is arranged in
rows and columns, such as tables and spreadsheets. You'll still lose font
formatting and colors, but you'll retain the grid-like layout of your work.

A tab delimited file is a special kind of plain text file with a tab between
each column in the text. When imported into Excel for example, the tabs
allow the columns to line up neatly.
Also, I have tried to export my current emails in my inbox and sent box by
dragging to the desktop, but both mbox files created are both 0kbs in size. Is
that right?

No! I'm surprised it even exported and didn't give you an error.
Thirdly, I am running Office X on OS 10.3.9. What is the highest version of
Office I can use on 10.3.9.

Minimum Operating System requirements for Office for Mac 2008: Mac OS X
version 10.4.9 or later. I'm not sure you can even buy Office 2004 except
perhaps on eBay.
And do you think it worth me updating to version 10.1.9 of Office?
Absolutely!>

Will it
solve my 'greying out' problem?

No, only a rebuild or starting in a new Identity will fix that problem.

What size is your database?
Or shall I just stick where I am until I buy a
new Mac. (If it ain't broke, too badly, don't fix it!)

I would upgrade Office X and start a new Identity. What you choose to do
with trying to recover your current Identity is up to your abilities or
having someone do it for you. I charge $35 to try to recover. Your local MUG
could probably give you names of other Mac consultants in your area so you
could compare prices. If your data is important, then it would be worth
either your time to recover or have someone else try to recover.

BTW, have you tried to see if your contacts exported? Contacts are as
important as your messages.
