Entrance hall slide show?

Hi,

I am trying to put together a slide show to be displayed on a plasma screen
in the entrance hall of a school. This will run from a dedicated PC with as
little interaction as possible.

I would like to be able to link the slide show to a database containing
names and birthdates, so that if it is a particular persons birthday it will
dynamically update a slide (at midnight I guess) to include that name and a
greeting. If possible it would also be nice to be able to display
information on forthcoming events, say in the next 7 days - also dynamically
updated as the date changes.

I'm not sure if powerpoint is what I'm looking for, I haven't had a lot of
look googling - so even if somone could give me a few words in the right
direction I'd appreciate it. I was considering an asp script (or something),
but i'd rather not risk installing iis on something that is likely to remain
unpatched for quite sometime.

information from your data sources is refreshed automatically while running.
